Sabrina Annlynn Carpenter's Quakertown Roots, Early Covers & The Next Miley Cyrus Project

Sabrina Annlynn Carpenter was born on May 11, 1999, in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, and raised in nearby East Greenville. Growing up in a household that deeply appreciated creative expression, Carpenter was surrounded by artistic influences from her earliest days. Her father, David Carpenter, played in a band during his youth and installed a home recording studio, while her mother, Elizabeth Carpenter, fostered an environment where music and performance were daily staples. Sabrina was raised alongside three older sisters—Shannon, Sarah, and half-sister Cayla—forming a tight-knit family unit that would later serve as a foundational support system throughout her intense journey into the entertainment industry.
Her passion for music manifested at a remarkably young age. Inspired by powerful female vocalists such as Christina Aguilera, Adele, Etta James, and Stevie Nicks, Carpenter began taking vocal lessons and uploading covers of popular pop and soulful tracks to YouTube when she was just ten years old. Recognizing her exceptional vocal control, natural stage presence, and unwavering focus, her parents chose to homeschool her starting at age ten to allow her the flexibility to pursue professional auditions in music and acting. A pivotal moment in her early development occurred when she placed third out of over 10,000 contestants in “The Next Miley Cyrus Project,” a national singing contest hosted by Miley Cyrus. The recognition solidified Carpenter’s ambition to make performing her lifelong career.
From Law & Order Debut to Girl Meets World Fame & Hollywood Records Contract
Carpenter’s entry into the professional acting landscape was swift. In 2011, at age 11, she secured her debut screen role on NBC’s long-running procedural Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, playing a young victim named Paula. This was soon followed by guest appearances on television series such as Orange Is the New Black and a recurring role as young Chloe Goodwin in Fox’s The Goodwin Games. She made her feature film debut in the 2013 dark fantasy thriller Horns alongside Daniel Radcliffe, showcasing a dramatic depth rare for performers of her age.
However, her career trajectory changed dramatically when she was cast as the rebellious, fiercely loyal Maya Hart in the Disney Channel comedy series Girl Meets World (2014–2017), a sequel to the beloved 1990s sitcom Boy Meets World. Carpenter’s performance as Maya earned unanimous praise from critics and fans alike, establishing her as one of the network’s standout young talents. Capitalizing on her widespread appeal, Disney’s music label, Hollywood Records, signed Carpenter to a multi-album recording contract. In 2014, she released her debut single, “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying,” followed by an EP of the same name. The track highlighted her folk-pop sensibilities, acoustic guitar charm, and mature lyrical perspective, setting the stage for her multi-dimensional career in pop music.

Following her initial success on Disney Channel, Carpenter launched her full-length debut studio album, Eyes Wide Open, in April 2015. The album debuted in the Billboard 200 and won a Radio Disney Music Award, driven by acoustic-driven pop anthems such as “Eyes Wide Open” and “The Middle of Starting Over.” As Girl Meets World continued its successful run, Carpenter balanced long television shooting schedules with studio recording sessions, culminating in her sophomore studio album, EVOLution, released in October 2016. Marked by electropop influences and darker production styles, EVOLution yielded her first Billboard Hot 100 entry with the brassy, confident single “Thumbs,” which earned a RIAA Platinum certification and showcased her evolving vocal maturity.
Between 2016 and 2019, Carpenter broadened her portfolio by starring in Disney Channel’s 100th Original Movie, Adventures in Babysitting (2016), voicing Princess Vivian in Sofia the First, and voicing Melissa Chase in the animated series Milo Murphy’s Law. Concurrently, her artistic identity underwent a sophisticated metamorphosis through a two-part album project: Singular: Act I (2018) and Singular: Act II (2019). Featuring dance-pop cuts like “Almost Love,” “Sue Me,” and “In My Bed,” these albums demonstrated Carpenter’s growing autonomy as a songwriter and her ability to navigate complex themes of independence, self-assertion, and emotional boundaries within contemporary pop music.
