From Suwon Ulzzang to SM Scouted Talent: Yu Ji-min (유지민)'s Pre-Debut Grind

Yu Ji-min, known universally by her stage name Karina, was born on April 11, 2000, in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Growing up in a supportive household alongside her parents and older sister, a registered nurse, Ji-min demonstrated an innate passion for performance and visual arts from an exceptionally early age. Her childhood environment encouraged artistic exploration, leading her to enroll in classical piano and vocal lessons while attending local schools in Gyeonggi-do.
During her middle school years at Jeongja Middle School and later at Hansung Academy, Ji-min developed a profound fascination with dance. Her early dance training was marked by extraordinary discipline; she spent countess hours mastering complex choreography styles, ranging from contemporary street dance to precise urban pop routines. Influenced heavily by legendary K-pop acts such as Girls’ Generation (SNSD), Taeyeon, F(x), and IU, Ji-min harbored ambitious dreams of standing under the bright lights of South Korea’s premier music stages.
Before ever stepping inside a professional entertainment agency’s training rooms, Ji-min was already generating organic buzz as an internet star, or ulzzang (a popular Korean term for individuals renowned for their striking facial features). Her captivating aesthetics, expressive eyes, and effortless personal style earned her a massive following on social media platforms long before her official debut. It was precisely this online visibility that caught the attention of SM Entertainment’s casting talent scouts in 2016. Recognized instantly for her symmetrical visuals, impressive height, and sharp rhythmic execution, Ji-min was recruited via direct message on social media—a modern discovery story that marked the formal commencement of her arduous journey toward global idol status.
To fully commit to SM Entertainment’s demanding training regime, Ji-min took the difficult decision to withdraw from traditional high school, subsequently obtaining her high school diploma by passing the General Educational Development (GED) equivalency examination. For nearly four years, she endured the famously rigorous SM trainee system, subjecting herself to daily vocal coaching, intensive dance evaluations, media training, and language studies in Japanese and English. Her unwavering determination quickly set her apart among dozens of aspiring trainees, positioning her as a flagship candidate for SM Entertainment’s next generation of stars.
