Robbert van de Corput: Classical Piano Beginnings and the Origin of the Hardwell Moniker

Robbert van de Corput was born on January 7, 1988, in the historic city of Breda, located in the North Brabant province of the Netherlands. Growing up in a supportive, creative household raised by his parents, Cor and Anneke van de Corput, young Robbert was exposed to music at a remarkably early age. At just four years old, he began formal piano lessons, demonstrating an innate ear for melody, chord progressions, and intricate musical structures. By the age of six, he was enrolled in the municipal music school in Breda, where he mastered classical keyboard fundamentals while absorbing the vibrant radio soundscapes of the 1990s.
It was during his pre-teen years that Robbert encountered the artistic spark that would alter the trajectory of his life forever. Watching a Dutch television documentary on electronic dance music featuring legendary Breda native Tiësto, Robbert realized that a single performer behind a set of turntables could command tens of thousands of souls. Inspired by Tiësto’s global ascendance, Robbert shifted his focus from classical piano to music production and DJing. At twelve years old, working on rudimentary digital audio workstations, he began engineering his first electro and hip-hop beats. To hone his craft live, he began performing as a hip-hop DJ across regional youth centers and local club competitions in Breda.
The creation of his stage persona was a collaborative family endeavor. His father, Cor van de Corput, proposed a Dutch-to-English translation of their family surname. In Latin, ‘Cor’ translates to ‘heart’, while ‘Put’ in Dutch means ‘well’. Replacing ‘heart’ with ‘hard’ to convey an energetic, edgy punch suitable for dancefloors, the moniker Hardwell was born. By the age of fourteen, Hardwell’s prodigious talent caught the attention of the Dutch producer duo Klubbheads, who offered him a professional recording contract with Digidance Records. Within weeks of signing, Hardwell dropped his first official mix compilation series, Bubbling Beats 1, launching him into the Dutch club circuit while still a secondary school student. To balance his burgeoning touring career with academics, he enrolled at the prestigious Rock Academy in Tilburg; however, as international demand rapidly escalated, he made the calculated decision to leave formal schooling to pursue electronic music full-time.
